THE ALUMNI BULLETIN

18 Oct 1948

 Greetings,

This is the second issue of the bulletin and apparently it is popular with some of our members as I have had  verbal endorsements from some of our Yokohama "48'ers" as well as a letter from James Hyatt.  I'm expecting other letters daily.

James says:  "I received your latest Alumni Bulletin today and was glad to hear from good ole YO-HI.  When Russell Meredith (Ernest's brother) arrived we both joined the service.  That was 27 July.  First we went to Fort Ord, Calif. and then got transferred to Ft Worden, Wash., just 40 miles from my home.  Our basic training is almost complete so we are leaving for Ft Belvoir, VA. for Draftsman School.  After that we are going to Leadership School.  We both like the Army and are having a lot of fun.  I, like Fred and Chuck, miss YO-HI too.  I would give my right arm to be back there with all the old kids.  Most of the alumni whom I write to feel the same.  I would like to thank you and the teaching staff for helping me further my education.   I would also like to thank Lt. Glaab for knocking a little football sense into my head.  My football season with him was my best and we had a lot of fun loosing all those games.   Please send to me the Alumni Bulletin for I am interested in my old school and I would like to have the addresses of the old kids if you  have them.  Would you mind telling the kids that are still there hello for me.  And to Mrs Steinbaugh I sure miss the good times we had in her room.

ABOUT SCHOOL

An epidemic of Shmoos have invaded YO-HI.  You see them on the bulletin boards, black boards, meet them in the hall, find them in your lunch.   You'll find Papa San Shmoos, Mama San Shmoos, Baby San Shmoos, Grandpa and Grandma Shmoos, Eskimo Shmoos, Japanese Schmoos and taksan just plain Shmoos. They are constructed from everything: Paper, clay, wood, ivory, cloth and used texts.  If you sit in one place long enough it is very possible that a Shmoo might be painted on your back.   Then the Shmoo by products - I could write a bulletin on those alone.  I'll merely mention the fact that we are blessed with an over abundance of such products.

Inter-mural sports opened with a bang today.  as I write this I can hear the Junior girls busy trouncing the Sophomores.  I have been dashing from my office to the Gym just to check on the games.  The first one:  Seniors 28 - Freshman 18.  Late flash Juniors 24 - Sophomores 4.  We are playing a series of 16 games and the winners to be declared school champions with appropriate awards.    "How id that shmoo get in that Coke Bottle? "Doc" Thompson will hear about this."

DA Granholm says:

"Thank you so much for the Alumni Bulletin. I think it is really a wonderful idea.  Arigato Gozaimasu. I know that everyone of us "48 ers" would really appreciate a monthly bulletin from our Alma Mater.  Stephen's is really a wonderful college, but they certainly keep us on the go.  Columbia is a small and beautiful college town. I visited the Missouri U. Campus the other day and that also is very pretty.  I see "Ginny" Browne quite often and we just set and reminisce over the wonderful times we had in Yokohama.  Then when we say goodbye we're so homesick we don't know what to do.  In the bulletin you said that you thought Mary Odell was in Stephen's College and I want to tell you that she is in the University of Kentucky.  Thank you again for the Alumni Bulletin and please do make it a monthly affair."

Greetings to William "Bill" Thompson, Georgia Tech., Atlanta, GA.
