KAMAKURA -- BUDDHA

The city of Kamakura has held a very important place in Japanese history.  Founded in 1185, it had served as the military capital of Japan during the 12the and 13th centuries, until it was sacked and destroyed in 1333.  In the last one hundred years many historical temples and buildings have been restored and Kamakura today thrives on its tourist industry and beaches.

Built to show the awesome power of the Zen Buddhists, The Great Buddha, or Daibutsu of Kamakura was built in the 12th century with a huge canopy on top of it.  The canopy has long since been destroyed but the statue of the Buddha itself stands and serves as one of the more common symbols of Japan.
