THE ALUMNI BULLETIN

FEB/MAR 1949

I'm going to make this two in one as I was late this month and late last month.  Maybe I'll be able to bring everything up to date that way.

Well, we have that Yokohama Chapter of the National Honor Society organized that we talked about last year.  Our first social affair was held yesterday 10 Mar, a tea for the parents.  Members selected were 10 seniors, 7 juniors and 3 sophomores.  I will not list all their names at this time but they are a mighty happy group of students.  They will receive membership pins, certificates and cards.   The senior having the highest scholastic yearly average will receive a cash gift of $50.00 from the school.  Maybe next year a substantial scholarship can be provided.

You should see the '49 edition of Yo-HI.  I got the dummy copy today and that flashy brocade cover just knocks your eyes out.  The students are really pleased with it.

I'm sorry to report that we haven't been doing so well recently in basketball. Moss went to Shiga Heights on a ski trip again this winter except this time he broke his leg.  We sure miss him on our team.  Then Bernstrom and Kirk Kuykendall both went home.  The result has been two games lost to Narimasu and one to Meguro.  The all Japan High School tournament comes up next week 18 and 19 March.   Our chances don't look to good at this stage of the game but you can depend on us to carry on in the true Yo-Hi fashion. We won't quit, we may take a beating now and then but we will never be whipped.

Wouldn't you all just love to be back in Japan now that cherry blossom time is just around the corner.  I really enjoy Japan at that time, not so much because of the proverbial blossoms but rather for the color and the way people seem to enjoy the season.

I'd better get in a few letters before I ramble on and take up all the space.

Jean Fuller says:

Dear Captain McCartney,

In six hours the new year will be here and I have decided that I should write before this year ebbs away.

I received the Alumni Bulletin this morning and after reading "Ginny's" letter I felt ashamed of myself, so here goes.

We enjoyed our trip home immensely, and "Biff", Ernie and Russ Meredith added to the gaiety of the voyage.  Jim Hyatt met us in Seattle so it was really a homecoming.

After staying in California for thirty days we set out for North Carolina. Since it was my first trip to the East coast I had a wonderful time looking at the rolling plains, wooded hills and dunes.  It seemed strange driving on the right side of the road. I started to school three weeks after our arrival in North Carolina and I really like it.

My Christmas holidays have been perfect.  Frances Hagan visited me, coming from Mississippi, and we had loads of fun reclaiming old memories and various acquaintances that we had in good old Y.H.S.  We were going to write a long epistle to you together, but the time flew so quickly we never got around to it.  She has now gone back to "Old Miss" with the determination to improve her school work.  Next year we are planning to go to school together -- I certainly hope we can.

I too think the Bulletin and Yo-Hi Echoes are wonderful ideas and if the other alumni enjoy it as much as I do, then it brings them a lot of happiness.   Give my love to the rest of the "Devils".   Jeanne     Address: No 80, Main Post, Ft Bragg, North Carolina

Jim Hyatt says:

Dear Sir:

How are you and everything in Yo-Hi?  It has been a long time since I've heard anything from there.

I wrote you a letter shortly after Christmas and apparently you didn't receive it or I haven't' received an answer.  It was in reference to organizing some kind of Alumni Club which would mean that every so often there would be a reunion (period unknown for the reunion).  I shall endeavor to explain a little more clearly

During the Christmas Holidays I spent a 10 day furlough in New York with my folks.  While I was there I got in touch with some of the alumni (Chuck Cronin, Chuck Stodter, Ginny Browne, Fred Kurdziolek, Dave Spurlock and Hazel Stodter), and we all talked about having a reunion of all the kids from YO-HI who could meet in some designated place. This may sound a little like "Bankers Talk" or like the reunions of alumnus of Yale or some other famous college. But since we may have been a little emotional and home-sick for Japan and the old gang it may sound a little insane.   I would like you if possible to let me know what you thing about this idea either by letter or through the alumni bulletin.

I have been in the Army 7 months now and think that I will make it my career.  I have put in my application for OCS and am now awaiting the results.   I have passed the tests and taken my physical and the only thing left is the interview.  They say it will take from 2 to 4 months for it to go through so now I am drafting for the Department of Engineering here at the post.

I had to submit my school transcript along with the application so would it be possible for me to get another one?

Is the Alumni Bulletin still being published for I haven't received any since October? The bulletin is a great idea and I'm sure the next graduating class will enjoy it as much as I have.

Well Sir, I must close now and clean that DARN rifle.   Sometimes I think I shall wear the blueing off.  Jim,   Pvt. James F Hyatt, Hq, Co, 1st School Bn, T.E.C.R, Ft Belvoir VA.

Merry St. Patrick's day to you all,

Captain McCartney
