James "Jim" Hyatt (48)
47-48
DOD: 01 April 2022

James "Jim" Hyatt (48) It was in the early 1990’s that Jim Hyatt, Yokohama American High School ’59, began sending letters to the editor placed in various newspapers throughout the USA seeking to find alumni from Yokohama American High School, aka YoHi, and its successor Nile C. Kinnick High School.  For many of us, this was our first reconnection with the YoHi world that we loved dearly, made such impactful impressions upon us, and we left upon our return to the USA.

With the growing use of the internet in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Jim began the development of the first iteration of the YoHi/Kinnick website that exists even today now managed by Bill Sims ’69—www.yohidevils.net.  Many of the pages contain files that Jim uploaded representing countless hours of time and effort.

We recently received word that Jim passed away on April 1, 2022 dying peacefully in his sleep at 92 years of age.  He was preceded in death by his wife Iva Hurst Hyatt, also of the YoHi class of 1949.  Preliminary information indicated that Jim was to be buried at the veteran’s cemetery in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina on April 11, 2022.  For those who are interested in learning more about Jim and his wife Iva, there is a wealth of information to be found at https://yohidevils.net/library/hyatt.htm and https://yohidevils.net/library/jim&iva.htm.

For many years Jim and Iva attended YoHi reunions and served as the “glue” that bound YoHi/Nile C. Kinnick alumni together.  To say that we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Jim and Iva would be an understatement.  They were the epitome of the YoHi Red Devil spirit and we are the inheritors of their legacy.
