![]() With the first snow fall on Fuji there is a certain crispness in the air that reminds one of leaves, cornstalks, and yellow pumpkins. Back home Halloween means soaping windows, stealing car keys, and to the less impulsive, parading up and down the streets dressed in absurd clothing and carrying a jack-o-lantern shouting "tricks or treats". Well, not that I am trying to disillusion anybody, but this is Japan and the natives do not appreciate Halloween. Last year the few who came in contact with this novel holiday were left quite puzzled after they saw she was Carolyn Buck and Madge McEldowney attended Sadie Mae William's costume party. Tardy Thayer was also present at the celebrated event, but as she specialized in undercover work the Japanese who were out at that unseemly hour were none the wiser. What did the boys do? There were not any except Hardy, Schanze, and Chuck Stodter, but we were led to believe that they also had a good time. There was just one defect to the celebration last year. Practically the only dependent houses at the time were in the Sun Oil Compound, and with everyone in Yokohama mutilating the place there really wasn't much left, so this time have some pity on the people living there. Enough for last year. Concerning this Halloween, destroying property is taboo due to the scarcity of several items. Another "don't" is molesting Japanese people and their property. Your funny tricks may be more than they can afford, and look what we're over here for....to show by example the ideal American family life. So, how about everybody turning up at the Grand Hotel Friday night. There will be fun for all and no guilty consciences such as: Bill...broken window...overturned honey-buckets: Dick...chalk off two more rice paddies...oops, better be more careful next time. Now don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to put a damper on Halloween. If you really want to go trick and treating but confine yourself to less drastic methods and keep in you own territory namely dependent housing areas. And to those people who would like to carve a nice fat yellow pumpkin ...sorry, but the few pumpkins found in this land of |
milk and honey are no larger than a grapefruit and
aren't very yellow. But even here in Yokohama if you search hard enough you'll find
witches and bats, black cats and rats, mice, ghosts, skeletons, pickled eels, various
sized octopus, and jack-o-lanterns leaning wickedly at the passers-by. And if on this long awaited night you think you see a graveyard gang, don't worry, the Japanese cremate their dead. Shirley O'H ASSEMBLY NEWS Two o'clock Friday afternoon saw a combined assembly and pep rally. Mrs. McEldowney, who is taking an active part in the teen-age activities, announced the coming Halloween party at the New Grand Hotel. A vote was taken on whether or not the dance should be costume. The majority of the students voted against the idea. A contest was held to select a name for our teen-age club. The winning submission (Race Track Rivera) will be given to General Byers for his approval. Biff Barnes and Fred Kurdziolek then gave talks on our pep squad's need for better organized bedlam at the football games. The athletic director, Lt Glaab, expressed his gratitude for our decision to have the rally at assemblies, "For," he stated, "It not only enables more students to attend the rally, but also goes easy on the athletic fund, which is still being used to pay for fences and traffic signs that mysteriously disappeared on the night of the first pep rally". Kitty Fox OUR PRINCIPAL SAYS Captain McCartney expressed these opinions and views in a recent interview with a representative of the feature staff... "...the progress of the school is beginning to take on great strides. Now that text books have arrived he hopes that this will go along at even greater speed and that the students will settle down to their studies..." "...at the beginning of the second school semester there will be some eighteen week subjects taught of those whose grades merit the taking on of more subjects. This will also benefit late arrivals to Japan....." "...the football team is very good and is representing our school with credit on the gridiron...." Mike Buckley |
![]() The lassie of Yo-Hi's personodity spotlight this issue is that so popular little sophomore besides being one of the prettiest gals in Yokohama High has oodles of personality plus. Her overflowing generosity and eagerness to assist others has won for her a true and lasting friendship of everyone who knows her. She states that golf and swimming are her favorite sports ; blue her favorite color, and "Billie Boy" is her favorite song! That gave it away....of course, it's Carolyn Buck. As everyone knows, Carolyn is leaving us next month so we all take this opportunity to wish her loads of luck where ever she goes. KNOW THE FACULTY Miss Craigmiles, our English I and III, Latin I and II teacher hails from Pleasant Hill, Illinois. A veteran from the Yokohama American School last year, she has been in the WAC five years this month and in Japan since October 21, 1946. At the Illinois Women's College she received her Bachelors Degree. Going on from there she received her Masters Degree at the University of Illinois and continued at the University of Chicago and Oregon. Before joining the Army, which she intends to remain in until the emergency is over, Miss Craigmiles taught in high schools in Illinois and Oregon, Milwaukee Downer College, and Mississippi State College for women. Her Army career includes teaching in Special Troop Unit Schools for Illiterate Soldiers. For eight months before coming to Japan she taught patients English, Algebra, etc. at Beaumont General Hospital, El Paso, Texas. "SOCIAL CIRCLE' It seems as though everyone is just all birthday's out...not a one celebrated since the last issue of the Echoes. But do you think that would stop the party life of Yo-Hi? No sir--ee--ee, just listen to all the fun we've had in the gym...well, to start off, a week ago Friday found a swell 12 piece orchestra furnishing us with music, and everybody dancing their feet off. There were cokes cold and the profit went to the Athletic Fund, of course. Last Friday we all got our heads together and cooked up a shindig at the Buckley's after the game..wasn't that a spectacular touchdown of Tex's?! Saturday was the night of nights, tho'. The gala occasion took place at "Ye Ole Gym", of course, which was decorated with lanterns, crepe paper, and all the accessories. In fact, when we entered we wondered if we were in the right place! The music was really on the beam, coming from the famed Octogonians" at their best. Of course there were snacks, cokes and songs on the house....and everything needed to make this party the best yet! |
Here we are back with some more of Yo-Hi's brainy ideas and styles. Beverly, you really started something by cutting bangs..did ya' notice Pat Fox pop into school Tuesday morning?...or is that front wisp of hair just growing shorter? Jack Mc is a dream-plus when he wears that Daniel Boone jacket. Sho' is sharp, isn't it kids? By Golly, Ginger L went and got herself in this column again, and with another jacket, too...this time it's the re corduroy deal! Golly, but it's out of this world! At first we though we were seeing double, but later discovered it's the McGregor twins, who even dress alike. Ya" can't tell us they're easy to distinguish either, 'cause Ginger W. isn't even sure which one asked her to the Teen-Age Dance! Aren't those darling suspenders of Peggy's. They serve a good purpose, too!...especially, if her skirts are too beeg!
No wonder Tex ran so hard for that touchdown...did ya' see the kiss Sharon gave him afterwards?! Here's a little matter for debate, kids....does Dick D. go to the football games to watch the game or to watch D A? Make for the hills, Walt! Said Hawkins day is coming and I know some fast runnin' gals that are interested! Carolyn Buck was awfully interested in one of the players the football game! It couldn't have been Bill E., could it Carolyn? Ah So!...D A is really ready for Freddie these days!! In case some of you are still wondering where Sharon got that "SHARP" red jacket, it was Dave Spurlock's! He must really be a handsome brute to cause Tardy to let her braids down,...come now, Tardy, tell us who it is! Donna, "is you is, or is you ain't his baby"? The way you've been actin' lately makes him doubt! Carol Browne still isn't doing so badly. And I'm not referring to grades! It seems that Ernie and Patsy took the advice about being more than "chummy". Lewis D is quite interested in D A's "swing". He isn't the only one, is he??? Oh, brother, can Mike and Ginny rumba! Better watch it Chuck, Mike seems to go after all the girls these days! We hear that Dick B. thinks that Judy S. is kinda cute...are we right, Dick? The little lass from Tokyo.....Who? Why Peggy B., of course, has caught several of the boys eyes! Hasn't she boys? Guess this just about winds up all the gossip...see you again soon! |

| The Y.A.H.S. football team battled the reserves of
2nd Major Port to a 6-6 tie before 2500 fans Friday night at Lou Gerhig Stadium. Y.A.H.S. was outgained throughout the game, but it was the speedy Port backfield that spelled the difference as the Y.H.S. line was battling their heavier opponents on even terms throughout the game. In the first quarter, which saw both teams in possession of the ball several times, Y.H.S. outgained the Port, but were unable to threaten seriously. However, in the second, the Port came to life and marched down field to score their touchdown. The kick for the point after the touchdown was low. After the halftime intermission it looked as though 2nd Port would take over where they left off, as they marched deep into Y.H.S. territory. Then, when the Port tried a reverse, Tex Weisler, from left end, stole the ball and raced 87 yards for a touchdown. The conversion was unsuccessful. Again in the fourth stanza 2nd Major Port threatened seriously. The drove to the Y.H.S. seven yard line before a penalty and superb play of the high school line snuffed the rally out. Time ran out with Y.H.S. in possession of the ball in its own territory. The passing attack of Y.H.S. was almost completely stopped, but the running game, which was sparked by quarterback Fred Kurdziolek, showed improvement. Although the whole team played inspired ball, Biff Barnes and Jim Hyatt were outstanding on defense. The receipts which total $500 will be added to the athletic fund. R Moss Y.H.S. will be seeking their first victory Friday afternoon, October 31, when they tangle with Headquarters Company, 2nd Major Port. Hostilities will get underway at Lou Gerhig Stadium at 2:30. School will be dismissed early. Everyone is urged to be on hand and support the team! Plans are being formulated for a basketball team and it will probably be one of the best equipped squads in Japan! A touch football team representing Y.H.S. will play the Tokyo American High School Saturday afternoon, November 1, at 2:30 in Tokyo.
There was a short discussion concerning changing the name of the school. After the discussion, a vote was taken which failed to carry a majority, but Tony Craver, the backer of the project, announced his plan to introduce this to all the other home rooms in order to have the name changed. |
Also following the announcement of class rings there
was much discussion and commenting. One plan was to buy them from a Japanese concern in
Tokyo while another suggestion was to order them from the States. Biff Barnes
suggested the class chotto matte, so that he could write a friend of his in the States and
secure information on the subject. Since the wearing of class colors went into effect anyone seen on Friday without the class colors on has to deposit .25 with Jim Hyatt as a fine. So far the following seniors have come to class on Friday without proper uniform, and forfeited the .25 fine: Groves Thompson, Dick Bernstrom, Frances Hagan, Nellie Gassman, and Beverly Trout. In the future lets come to class with the proper colors at the prescribed time. In Parting I leave you with this thought: It's hard to part with those we love when our hearts are full of hope, But it's harder still to find a towel, when our eyes are full of soap. D.D. Since the last issue of Yo-Hi Echoes, four new students have been added to the junior class. The first, Bob Jaflim, comes from Racife, Brazil. He lived there twelve years, than came to the Stated in March, 1945. He has been here a month. Herbert Dimon came next. He claims San Pedro, California as his home town. Although he had only beenhere about a week, he played in last Friday game. The third arrival seems to have had a very interesting life. His name is Larry Thompson and he is the son of a Missionary. Consequently, he has lived all over the United States, in China, and Korea. He also lived for three years in Nagasaki before the war. His father is presently in Okinawa. His mother and he are staying with friends. When Larry's father gets here they will move to Kamakura. The newest addition comes from San Antonio, Texas. Her name is Carmen McCarthy and she reports that she thinks Y.H.S is wonderful. Since the former vice-president Jim Mooney, has gone home, the junior class has elected Carol Browne in his place C.B. To the little boy with the sniffles who steps aboard the school bus and sits beside her Mommasan ( Ginger L.) says, "Little boy, don't you have a handkerchief?" Jim P. answers "Yes, man, but I don't lend it to strangers." Tony C. Can I put this wallpaper on myself? Clerk: I guess so, but I really would look much better on the wall! |
![]() Although the sophomores didn't lead in the ticket selling for the Y.A.H. vs Second Major Port game, we're all proud that we sold 210 tickets. For a class of about 30 that's pretty good. The sophomores are all proud of their fellow classmate, Tex Weisler, who ran 87 years for the tying touchdown in the 2nd Major Port game. That should make the other classes sit up and take notice. We are also proud of Danny Dugan whose brainstorm suggested the "Race Track Riveria" as the name for the new teen-age club located near the race track. We have eight "brains" in the sophomore class who actually made the honor roll. They are: Carolyn Buck, Ann Cook, Betty Grissom, Jeanne Jacques, Shirley O'Hanlon, Helen Papen, Pat Platt, and Constance Watts. Good going girls...let's see if the boys can't make some sort of a showing next time! E.M. LIBRARY CLUB NEWS The library club met not along ago and elected the very able following persons for the officers of the club: Ginny Mountz- President, Carol Browne-Vice-President, Bev Trout-Secretary, and Tex Weisler-Treasurer.
