                 HAPPY NEW YEAR

Old Father Time walked up to us the other day, and, after paying his respects, said, "You know, I would like very much to follow that Yokohama High School through its first year.  I took a fancy to it quite some time ago and I well remember that day, September 15, when the school year began.  There were no text books at first but the students didn't seem to mind that too much.  Then the good times began and spirits soared when the football team appeared.  I knew then that this school would have a wonderful future and I believe the students knew how lucky they were.  Now I'll soon be gone but when 1948 arrives I'm sure  he'll carry you through the New Year with great fortune and happiness.  Looking back over my reign I realize I have brought some hardships and sorrows but--after I am gone I will not have my good name blemished with accusations that I heralded the "New Look".  With this the old man turned away and walked unnoticed into the past.

At that instant young '48 sprang up  and we could hear nothing but the tooting of horns and sirens and shouts of "Happy New Year" and low and behold there was the New Year at the Neet Nac.  As he walked in Chuck asked for his membership card and then it was discovered that '48 had not paid Ernie his '47 dues.  As young '48 surveyed the club we heard him say, "What a happy group of boys and girls these are. I am curious to see what they will resolve for the New Year.  We hope '48 wasn't disappointed for he soon found that quite a few people including Biff, Madge, and Buzz can't make their new year's  promise.   However, Pat Buckley said she wouldn't dent her car, Tony said he would wear a tie on Sundays and Ginger Larkin promised she wouldn't gossip.

Anyway, New Year informed us he enjoyed the party in his honor at the Neet Nac and decided at once he would show us all a wonderful time until the appearance of 1949.          S O'H

            OUR PRINCIPAL SAYS

Both basketball teams did very good jobs at the previous games but we are still looking forward to improvement.  I would like the teams to keep in mind not only basketball but also their studies which are without a doubt the more important.  As you know, if your average is below a C you are ineligible to play.  So, if you intend playing basketball, think of your regular school work also and avoid disappointments.             K F

                    CLUB NEWS

The Library Club recently elected Frances Hagar as Secretary-Treasurer.  Beverly Trout formerly filled the post but has since departed for the States.

Miss Malone, director of the Drama Club announces that there will be a meeting next Tuesday after school.  It will be held in the library for the purpose of electing club officer.  Miss Malone reports that she hopes to put on a three act play later this year.

We are wondering what the Glee Club has been doing.  We queried several members and they replied that they had not gone recently.  Could it be homework was the reason?

A new committee is going to be elected to manage the Neet Nac. Each homeroom was to choose its representative.  We all realize what a fine job the first committee has done to make our club the wonderful place it is now.

              ASSEMBLY PROGRAM

Last Friday, YHS students were greeted with a pleasant surprise when they came into the Auditorium.  A choral group from the Ferris sang four well-known songs including "The Blue Danube" and the "Hallelujah Chorus by Handel,".   Everyone enjoyed the singing very much, especially because it was something new in the way of Assembly programs.  After the program, Tony Craver, president of the student body, made several announcements regarding basketball. Question of the week:  Will we pass our exams?  Tune in two weeks from now and find out the answer.

                 PERSONODITY

This week's personality is a cute, popular senior, who claims Sioux City, Iowa, as her birthplace.   She participates in many of the activities of the school, such as basketball, cheerleading, and an ardent member of the newspaper and annual staffs.

Her favorite pastimes are swimming, dancing, tennis, and of course, "MEN". She is also vice-president of the student body.

A key to her identity is her"Smiling Irish Eyes"   Well, has any one figured out who this little senior is?  Yep, That's right, Sharon O'Hanlon.

                 SNOOPER

Flash!! Who was seen where doing what with whom?

Tony seems to have changed his mind about the "New Look"/  Could Jackie Maddrix have anything to do with this sudden change, Tony?

We notice that Bill Thompson never knows what's going on at the ball games anymore ...... he keeps up with a cute cheerleader, though.

Carol B and Mike are really going places these days ... together, that is.

I hear the Jennifer Chazel has her eye on a certain lad for the Valentine Dance.  Who's the lucky one, Jennifer?

Looks like Pat Buckley and Buzz have gotten off to a big start.

I heard John McClosky say he was out for a "woman".  Watch it, girls, he had a gleam in his eye!

Pat Fox and Pat Fuller will have to get together and compare the Meredith brothers.

Sharon claims she's going stag to the next dance.  Ha ha, wanna bet?

It was pretty tough for some gals on "Man-hating day".  For example, Nellie G couldn't speak to Jim Hyatt for a whole day!

Who's it going to be next D A?  I may be wrong but I heard that Pat Markley was being asked to the leap year dance!

Biff is surely making the rounds these days ... Ginger ... Peggy, Peggy, Ginger, Ginger, Peg ... Gin ... Peg...

Mystery of the week...who stole the fudge from Mrs. Stodter's icebox?

                 SOCIAL CIRCLE

Coming as the first festivity of the Christmas season was the dance at the Neet Nac on December 19.  A good time was had by all, particularly because the dancing took place under the strategically placed mistletoe!

The following evening witnessed a party in honor of the football team at the O'Hanlon home.  A  light lunch was served after which many danced while others chose to gather 'round the phonograph and Christmas tree to listen to carols.

Directly after Christmas, on the 26th to be exact, Helen Papen got the gang together for dancing at the Star Hotel.

A masked masquerade was the by-word on New Year's Eve for the shindig at the Neet Nac.  Some kids didn't recognize their best friends, which goes to show just how clever we are. As midnight drew nigh, the sounds of horns and noisemakers filled the air and the New year was rambunctiously ushered in.  Although some could have kept on till dawn, 2 AM was closing time.

Friday Russ Meredith had a buffet dinner to celebrate his birthday.  I might add that there was quite a crowd on his front porch helping him smoke his cigars.   They weren't all boys, either, were they , Peggy?

The next evening Bill Willis through his blowout at the ever popular Star Hotel.

And this brought to a close a round of parties that had everyone's head in a spin.                             P F

            FADS AND FASHIONS

Santa Claus was certainly good to a lot of Yo-Hi's lads and lassies...and he showed such good taste, too.  Some of the lucky people who are sporting such "lush" garments are:

Biff Barnes and his sooo-ooooo-oooo very green shirt.

Fred Kurdziolek and Dick Bernstrom seem to have added 60 million more sweaters to their collection, and are they all drooly.

Brucie is the envy of one and all when she wears that darling red wool blouse.

And Jean J...you look precious in that black and plaid outfit!!

Zounds ... the "New Look" again ..... but isn't it attractive on Tardy, Pat F, and Mrs. Grey. (Meaning their new long skirts of course).  Pat Fox wore the whole business Tues ... gibson blouse and skirt ... she really looked stateside.

Madge M is literally flowing in beautiful sweaters .. those blue and aqua Tally-Hos are out of this world!

Bob Slade and Fred K both look sharp in their twin blue and grey sweaters.

Tom Watson certainly received the complements on that pretty plaid shirt he wore to school Tues.

And we mustn't forget to mention Tony's plaid shirt (that red cotton affair). Plaids and Craver really agree with each other, don't they, kids?

Afraid this is about all we can squeeze in for not ... more later, though.     S O'H

          SENIOR SCOOPS

Yes, it finally happened, the senior party for the naming of the school paper, was held at the Neet Nac Friday, before the holidays.  Presents were exchanged with surprising results. To Biff went a bus  , to Tony a Japanese pipe, to Fred, a baby bottle and to others went such presents as cigars, writing paper, and airplanes.  Hence, all the food was free and quite a quantity as consumed, and everybody had a swell time.

The class ring affair was finally settled, and the seniors have till the 16th to place their orders for the type of ring they want.  Let's be sure and get our order in by then so one big order can be drawn up and the rings can be imported from the States.              D D

                JUNIOR JIVES

Carmen MacCarthy reports that she had a fire recently at her house.  It started in the fuse box and was serious enough so that her family had to move to Cebu   Courts for a couple of days.

The Juniors seem to have enjoyed themselves during the Christmas vacation.

Several took trips to Akakura, Kobe, War Crimes Trials, etc.  Even so, most of them stayed home and became society belles and beaus.   Everyone enjoyed the Christmas and New Year's dances at the Neet Nac.

Most of the Juniors displayed considerable imagination in thinking up costumes for the New Years Dance.  Most notable were Pat Fuller's, Tardy Thayer's and Walt Henderson's (a last minute arrangement), Bill Rees's and Donna Abbott.               C B

               FRESHMAN FROLICS

All the freshman class had a very nice vacation and didn't like to start back to school

On the 19th of December the two homerooms went together and had a party.   Everyone had a good time and plenty to eat.

            ANNOUNCEMENT

Mrs. Johnson wishes to announce to all YHS students a party to be held at the Neet Nac, Saturday, January 24.  It is to be from 7:00 to 11:00 PM and is formal.   The music will be provided by an orchestra.

                       JOKES

Donna: You're not a  bad looking sort of fellow.  Tony: you'd say so even if you didn't think so.  Donna: Well, we're square then, You'd think so even if I didn't say so.

Madge: Come...Flee with me.  Danny:  I can't flee with you, I'm wearing my father's pants.  It would be terrible to see the headlines in tomorrow's paper:  FLEES IN FATHER'S PANTS.

Bruce W:  I'm a ladykiller.  Stephanie:  Yeah, one look at you and they drop dead!

                         SPORTS

Bully for our side --- Yo-HI's First Triumph.

The YAHS B squad started the ball rolling in the first of two games scheduled for Tuesday night at Fryer Gym.  Yokohama Nisei All Star team, our first opponents, led the B squadders on a merry chase, eventually galloping off with the game, leaving a not to enlightening score of 42-11 (their favor) to glare at us from the scoreboard.

But even if the victory didn't go to us, it presented to the public eye the basketball aspirants, who, we hope, will give future opponents a run for their money, and come across with victories enough to put Y0-Hi "up there" in the standing of other teams hereabouts.

Verily, some of the alleged hopefuls on both A and B squads show quite a bit of promise, and the crystal ball has it that they will soon be making names for themselves in Basketball to go along side those who already made theirs in football.

The A squad, in the second half of the evening's activities, hoped to level things by ... (what else) ... waiting.  So accordingly, they trotted reasonably on to the court, eyeing the St Joseph's boys, who showed plenty of glitter in their flashy green uniforms.  This, however,  was but a glimmer compared to the explosion caused by the "Devils" red and white striped socks.

The game got under way and from the start to the finish, action was of the essence.  Roland Moss scored before the first twenty seconds of play had lapsed and Dick Bernstrom followed suit before another twenty seconds had a chance to tick by.   Duplication their actions came Buzz Newman, likewise scoring here the next minute had expired.  From there on, points flew thicker and faster and at the half, the score stood 27-15---our favor, mind you.

Despite the determined efforts of the St Joe's boys, the YAHS team, spearheaded by Kurdziolek, Newman, and Thompson, rolled on to a victorious conclusion, creating the year's first official victory for YAHS (final score--44-32).

Tribute, however, must be payed to the exemplary playing demonstrated by DeSilva, Ermakoff, Minenko, and others at St Joe's.  Further recognition goes to Lt Heiss, who officiated A and B squad games, as well as many of our former football games, and Lt Wallace and Chopleski, time and score keepers, and Tony Craver, the team's new business manager  And here I wish to devote a sentence to an unsung hero seldom seen or spoken of in the editorials, but a dependable and commendable fellow, Tom Watson, our ubiquitous student manager. (P S That big word is intended as a compliment.)

        Girls Make Their Debut-26-6

The Yo-Hi girl's team met the 8000th Wac Det Friday night at the grammar school in a game for the girls and they gave a pretty good account of themselves even if they did lose 26-6.

Scoring for dear old Alma Mater were Sharon O'Hanlon, Jennifer Chazel, and Brucie Watts, while captain for the evening was guard Jackie Graham.  Jackie came appropriately arrayed in pigtails, and looked like a veteran player as she barks her opponents into submission.

The whole team played a good game and feel confident that they'll walk away with the next game.

The first team (boy's, this time) took on the 8001st T C team in the second half of the evening and chalked up number two victory for the year with a score of 25-14.  It looks pretty much as if those first stringers are on their way up!  W H

              FOOTBALL BANQUET

Thursday, January 8, the football team and their fathers were guests at the first annual football father-son banquet in the Hodogoya Country Club.  The dinner consisted of roast beef, baked potatoes, green peas, tomato juice, rolls, ice cream and cake.   Capt. McCartney, the master of ceremonies, brought out the difficulties which the team had to overcome in a short time and then introduced Col. Marks, Col. Caruthers, and Col. Pell, the guest speakers.  They spoke on the good sportsmanship which the team showed, the obstacles which stood between the school and a well equipped football squad.   And how they were oversized, and always placing studies before football respectively.

Coach Glaab then introduced several of the players as co-captains, Kurdziolek and Barnes, and spoke a few words about the team.  Major Hiatt and Lt Wallace showed moving pictures of the games.

Jim Hyatt, Bertram Barnes, and Tony Craver were in charge of the decorations and each place was furnished with a program and a very attractive place card.  A miniature football field stood on one of the tables and a paper football with the names of the squad was placed on the field.  The banquet was a great success and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
