Former Italian luxury liner, following the armistice with Italy that had been arranged by Admiral Cunningham and approved by General Eisenhower, was taken over by the United States.  Converted to a troop ship.

In 1944 was converted to an Army hospital ship - FRANCES Y. SLANGER. 

In 1945/6 converted for transporting military dependents - 1,131 women and 371 children - and given her former name - SATURNIA.
