AUGUST 2004

Dear KHS/Yo-Hi Alumni,

This short newsletter was sent to our Kinnick Community in August just to let everyone know that we were alive and well!  The school year has now started, and we survived the first week of new students, holes in schedules, and nervous freshmen. And, I’m excited to continue sharing the Red Devil news with you, the devoted alumni of Nile C. Kinnick High School. Please enjoy.

*********************************

We’re excited for the school year to begin, and we’re especially excited to welcome your teens back to school.

There has been major renovation taking place this summer at Kinnick! We have completely renovated the air condition/heating system so that teachers have their own controls in their classrooms. This should make a tremendous difference to the classroom "quality of life." J The Little Theater finally has new carpet, new blinds, and new seats. It was in dire need of renovation. And, we have new red lockers for our students. These are supposed to be the graffiti-free lockers, and they have built-in combinations. I am thrilled with the renovations, and there are more to come.

Please welcome our new assistant principal, Mr. David Tran. Mr. Tran was a science teacher here three years ago and was promoted to an assistant principal at MC Perry/Iwakuni. He was at MC Perry for two years. I’m very excited to have Mr. Tran back. He has a wealth of experience in high school administration (having been an assistant principal at a large state-side high school when hired by DoDDS). Mr. Tran is very well-liked by the KHS faculty, staff, and students who were here when he arrived at Kinnick.

Please look closely at the below dates for the beginning of the school year. As always, our Master Calendar is on the KHS Intranet. We are in the process of updating the Master Calendar, so give us a few days to have it up and running.

Please, please, please take time to access our KHS Intranet. It contains very valuable information for all of our Kinnick Community members. To access the KHS Intranet:

The KHS administration, counselors, and office staff are on board even though the office is now getting carpet. Should we have to vacate the office, we’ll leave a message on the answering machine as to where we are and a note on the door. That will be through the weekend only.

Take care, and we’ve missed you and your teens. We’re excited for the school year to begin!

SEPTEMBER 2004

Dear KHS/Yo-Hi Alumni:

Welcome to SY 2004 – 2005 and a very special welcome to the Class of 2005 and senior parents!

When I returned from summer vacation, I couldn’t believe all of the construction taking place. Of course, I really could, BUT I didn’t think the school would look like an empty shell! What a mess! However, things came together so nicely, and we now have beautiful red lockers in place, all new carpeting throughout the school, brand new carpeting and new theater seats in the Little Theater, and individual air/heat controls in all classrooms for the teachers. We still have quite a bit of work to do, but little by little, things are improving for our teens. We, also, received five more outdoor tables and umbrellas for the courtyard. It was wonderful today seeing all of the red – tables as well as students.

Today was Principal’s Spirit Day. This is in addition to our Spirit (red) Fridays. There will be three or four Principal’s Spirit Days each year, and the class that has the most students in red will receive ice cream treats after school within the week. I’m still tabulating! Please encourage your teens to wear their red on Fridays (and on Principal’s Spirit Day).

For those of you new to the Yokosuka community, please know that one of my goals is to have a student-oriented, effective school so that all students can be successful. This goes right along with Goals 2 and 4 of our Community Strategic Plan. One of the ways to accomplish that is to have strong, two-way communication. Therefore, I have an open-door policy at all times, and I encourage all of you to come in for a visit and to communicate to me any concerns that you may have. During the early mornings, I will be out on campus and in classrooms. Should you need to see me or to talk to me, I would like to suggest calling or coming by mid-morning or early afternoon. Please know, though, that you are always welcome!

Throughout this year, and as is always the case with high schools today, we will be facing many exciting challenges together as we move into the school year and continue with our Community Strategic Plan – high student achievement, an efficient management system, a highly motivated and diverse workforce, and stronger community partnership. Counseling Department Chair, Mrs. Rita Bullock, will be sending slides out to you soon illustrating our students’ test scores on the TerraNova, SAT, ACT, and other assessments in order to communicate and address our involvement and commitment to high student achievement.

We will continue to work department by department to analyze test scores and teachers’ teaching strategies in order to continue improving these scores. Simply put, our faculty here at Nile C. Kinnick High consists of outstanding teachers! Many of our teachers were, again, attending workshops and seminars all over the world throughout the summer in order to expand their expertise in the curricular areas in which they teach. I can say, for certain, that most teachers do attend school during the summer so that they can be the best for our students (your teens).

We are continuing our School Improvement Plan (now called CSI – Continuous School Improvement). Continuous work on high student achievement through problem solving and reading comprehension will be at the forefront. We feel that in addition to having two very strong goals, we are in keeping with Sullivan’s’ Elementary School and Yokosuka Middle School and can work as a complex on improving our students’ reading skills. You will be hearing quite a bit this year from our CSI Leadership Team about our school improvement plan and how we’re progressing. We will be having in-service days to work on our CSI plan. As always, you are invited to join us on these workdays.

We have fifteen (15) new teachers/staff members on board this school year! They are as follows:

Mr. David Tran Assistant Principal

Mr. David Abbott Business/Video

Ms. Jessica Biggs School Psychologist

Mrs. Shirley Boots Math

Mr. John Brown Special Education

Mr. Steve Choate Computers

Mr. Shane Hernandez Art

Mr. Nico Hindie Read 180/Social Studies

Mrs. Verdelle Joyner Guidance Counselor

Mrs. Wei Mitchell Math

Mrs. Susan Scherr Culinary Arts/Health Care/SAT Prep

Mr. Mike Schoebinger Computers

Mr. Robert Stovall English/ELA Lab

Mr. Wil Vandermeyden Math

Mr. Gary Wilson Math

I am very pleased to announce that we have some additional new programs we are offering this year as well as continuing programs from last year. To support our PTS (Professional Technical Studies) initiatives, we now have Hotel Management. This will be taught by Mr. Bill Schofield. Mr. Schofield has received extensive training in this area, plus he has trained and worked in this area prior to entering the field of education. We are still offering the Algebra/Geometry Support in conjunction with Algebra I and Geometry in order to provide math to these students on a daily basis. The support classes are for elective credit only. Parents whose teens have been selected to participate in these support classes have already received an introductory letter from me. These are wonderful opportunities to help our teens improve and achieve. And, we are moving ahead in the areas of cosmetology, pre-engineering, robotics, LabVolt, auto mechanics, CISCO Networking, Microsoft certification, computer repair, and video classes just to name a few.

We offer twelve (12) AP classes and have added a combined 10th grade honors English/World History for sophomores. The honors classes will no longer be weighted; only AP classes. However, please remember that to receive the weighted grade, our AP students must take the exam (which is now paid for by DoDDS).

I will continue to keep you posted on our curriculum and all that is taking place academically at Kinnick. We have a great high school with so much to offer to our students.

The faculty and staff at Kinnick High School have a true commitment to the education of the Nile C. Kinnick students. We believe this can be achieved by setting clear expectations and by creating opportunities for parents to become active partners in what we do. I encourage all of you to become involved and to make an individual commitment to making this the most successful school year ever.

OCTOBER 2004

Dear Yo-Hi/KHS Alumni:

Greetings from Nile C. Kinnick High School, Home of the Red Devils! We’re off to a great start this school year but busy, as always! I can’t believe it’s already October, and at the end of this month, we’ll be getting ready for yet another Homecoming! For now, it’s "back to business" and getting everyone back into the routine. I have someone new doing the Student/Parent Newsletter – Marc Zamora. He is so talented. So, if you can access the newsletter, you’ll be impressed. Our Internet website has been down (for the entire district) until this past week. Now that it is back up and running, my new webmaster will get things going, and you’ll be able to access many Kinnick items.

I would like to thank all of our teachers, staff members, parents, and students for a very successful Open House on Thursday, September 16. I appreciated the positive comments about the afternoon. I would like to extend a public thanks to our Student Council Officers and JROTC cadets and sponsors for their assistance at Open House. They all did a terrific job and worked hard to get schedules ready, food prepared, and hallways decorated – all to make Kinnick look good for you.

A very special thanks to Captain King Dietrich, our Base Commander, for his brief but very important message at Open House. Please remember we have many available resources at Kinnick to help and assist your teens.

Thanks, too, to Mr. Gary Starrine for his information on the Intranet. This is an extremely valuable resource for school information and is at your fingertips!

As is the case every year, I would appreciate any feedback on our Open House. Even though we no longer offer the traditional back-to-school night, I would like your input on the format. Is the more casual Open House meeting your needs? Would you prefer the former format where teachers follow a set bell schedule and attend every class of their son/daughter? Please let me know.

The month of October brings us to the mid-point of the first grading period. Progress Reports are due in on October 4 and will be mailed out around October 6. Parents, please talk with your sons and daughters regularly about their progress in school. Ask questions about their homework, projects, etc. If you have any concerns about their academic progress, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Michelle Penaranda, Registrar/Guidance Secretary, at 243-7393, to make an appointment with the respective teachers and/or counselors.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your support with our dress code at Kinnick. I know that this probably sounds like a minor issue, but it really isn’t. We have had two injuries just last week with students wearing flip flops/shower shoes/rubber thongs – the very bare, flat flip flops with no covering on the top of the foot. These kinds of shoes are not permitted at school for safety reasons. Please help us by not permitting your teens to wear these to school. Additionally, t-tops, bare midriffs, hip hugger pants, etc. are not permitted. We’re seeing lots of cleavage this year, and it isn’t appropriate for school. For boys, no bagging pants, t-shirts (underwear), and for all students, no t-shirts with inappropriate sayings. We have never allowed do-rags or bandannas of any kind. The dress code is spelled out in more detail in the Student-Parent Handbook which is in the front of your teen’s planner as well as on our Intranet. We have this dress code for safety as well as to help students maintain a focus on school and learning. Thank you for your help and assistance with our dress code.

This is a friendly reminder that we have a wide variety of after-school programs for your teens to include After-School Study Program, Fine Arts/Photography Club, International Activities club, Japanese Club, Math Tutoring, Community Service Learning Club, Cosmetology Club, Video Club, and a Step Team will be starting, again, this year. These are in addition to athletics, band, drama, student council, student newspaper, and yearbook! Please encourage your teens to become involved in high school. As I often state, research shows that the more your teens are involved in school and the more involved you are in their education, the more successful your teens will be. We have so much to offer your teens here at Kinnick.

Please remember that if your teens’ absences are not cleared by the third day after the absence, your teen will receive an in-house suspension for truancy. You may clear absences by a phone call, by a note, or by an email. High school attendance is an enormous job. We need your assistance with this very important task.

I would, also, like to take this opportunity to ask for your support in limiting your vacations to the dates of our school vacations. There is a tremendous impact on student achievement when students miss a great deal of school. Our students need to be in school in order to achieve. Again, I would appreciate your support with this.

Educators’ Day this year will be on Friday, October 15, at Lanham Elementary School near Zama. For those of you new to the area, this is a day in which students are not in school. You are cordially invited to attend this wonderful opportunity to see teachers teaching teachers. I will send out the workshop agenda as soon as I receive it. Again, you are more than welcome to attend and enjoy what our outstanding teachers have to offer in terms of staff development.

We are constantly striving for excellence in many areas. Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can better serve you and your children. And, as always, we appreciate your support.

NOVEMBER 2004

Dear Yo-Hi/Kinnick Alumni,

I apologize for not getting this message out to you sooner!  Seems like it gets busier and busier every year!  Just so you know, our December/January newsletter will be combined and coming out towards the end of the first week in December – shortly before Winter Break.  So, I’ll try to do a better job at getting that to you around the same time that I send it to our Kinnick Community.

In this issue of our parent newsletter, I reported to our community some of the many positive activities and events that are taking place at Kinnick High School.

Friday, November 5, 2004, was Homecoming.  We played Edgren High School from Misawa.  The Red Devils won, hands down.  Always nice to win at Homecoming.  This was a particularly special Homecoming for all of us.  The theme was “Honoring Those Who Serve.”  We all wanted to honor not only our military community but all of those who contribute to society.  Our Grand Marshals were Capt. Tom Parker, Commander of the USS KITTYHAWK, and parent/volunteer extraordinaire, Loria Lynce.  In addition, members of our military community joined in our annual Homecoming Parade.  The MP’s had their humvee decorated, the firemen participated by driving a decorated van in the parade as well as allowing our cheerleaders to sit atop and ride their huge fire truck, sailors from the USS KITTYHAWK marched in the parade, and then we had our usual assortment of participants who included the JROTC cadets and drill team, all class floats and banners, any other clubs and organizations, the KHS Step Team, and of course the administrators riding in convertibles.  It really was such a neat Homecoming.  One of the best, I think!

We just finished our Fall Sports Season and will soon be starting the Winter Sports Season.  I always like to thank to the coaches, students, and parents for making this Fall Sports Season a terrific one.  Our students did well, and exhibited a tremendous amount of spirit, determination, fun, good sportsmanship, and integrity.  I deeply appreciate all of the hard work of all of the coaches who work with our student athletes.  They spend hours with our students.  And, now, we’re moving on to wrestling, cheerleading, and basketball.   Cheerleading is a part of almost all of the seasons and is now revving up for the winter sports.  They are to be commended for bringing spirit, energy, fun, excitement, dedication, and endless hours of practice.

I always like to commend our NJROTC cadets and leaders for their continued support of the school.  They are at almost every event, looking sharp, and representing us all very well.  Show Choir is continuing with their superb performances as are our band students.  We have the only marching band in the Pacific, and they are visible at so many events – both at school and in the community.  Their presence at our games add a whole new dimension to the fun and spirit, and their performance at Homecoming was excellent as always.  This year, they wore their brand new marching uniforms and looked sharp.

In addition to the above, and because we know that involvement in school activities is important to the development of our students and to their overall success in school, we, also, offer the following activities and already have many students involved:  Japanese Club, International Culture Club, Kinnick Community Service Club (KICS), a newly formed KHS Step Team, Video Club, and Fine Arts/Photography Club, JROTC Armed Drill Team, JROTC Unarmed Drill Team, Color Guard, Honor Guard, Film Club, Billiards, Club, Go Club, and more.   The teachers who sponsor these organizations work hard to ensure that our teens enjoy many fun events and in some instances contribute to the community.

I always like to mention that I think any member of our community would be impressed with the involvement of our students.  One needs only to stop by the high school on any given afternoon to see the many students involved in the many activities that are offered.  I always enjoy saying, “This place never closes down.”  It takes a group of very dedicated teachers and sponsors to make these things happen.

We are continuing to make progress on our School Improvement Plan goals – reading comprehension and problem solving.  Based on our school-wide assessments, the various departments are working on our problem-solving model with their students and will begin the reading intervention, SQ3R.

I do hope all of our alumni have a very Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels if you’re heading out to visit family and friends.  It is always such a treat to hear so many nice things from you!

DECEMBER 2004

Dear Yo-Hi/KHS Alumni,

We are combining our December/January Newsletter and won’t be sending another one until the end of January. I will, however, be sending updates and a variety other information out to you throughout the next two months.

For your planning, semester exams will be the week of January 24. Friday, January 28 is a Teacher Workday, and then second semester begins on Monday, January 31, 2005!

On Friday, February 11, we will have our last Parent Conferences for the school year. The schedule will be somewhat the same as the November 19 schedule in that we will have only a half-day, and students will be released at 11:00 a.m. What will be different is that I will be holding a “mandatory” meeting of all senior parents to discuss senior concerns and the need for our seniors to be on track for the rest of the year in order to graduate. More information will be forthcoming about this meeting. We will, also, be requiring parents of seniors who are not on track to graduate to meet with the respective teachers and the senior counselor. Those seniors in danger of not graduating are already required to attend our After-School Study Program, M-TH, 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Information Center. (This program is for all students but required for any senior with an “F”). Parents of seniors, we need your help to keep our seniors on track this year!

Math Matters is the DoDEA theme this year. In October, Kinnick hosted a Math Symposium for all high school math teachers on the Kanto Plain, and we are now planning the next steps in order to follow up and establish some best practices in math. However, the push for a standards-based education (SBE) is on going.

To some of you, this will be very repetitious, but I always like to send this out to our parents AND to our teachers as a reminder of where we need to be heading with respect to teaching. Therefore, I am including, again, some information about SBE, how to lead towards an SBE school, and how the SBE classroom looks (as opposed to the non-SBE classroom). This is very important in our school and important in how we “do business.” Some examples are as follows:

CURRICULUM

Yesterday Today
.
*What is taught *What is learned
.
*Chapters covered and workbooks completed *Identification of what students should know
.
*Textbook as a resource *Multiple resources
.
*Individual subjects *Integrated subjects
.
*Teacher centered *Learner centered
.
*Organized around time *Organized around results
.
*Bell curve *Rubrics
.
*One opportunity *Multiple opportunities
.
*Passive learning *Active learning

I am very committed to moving our teachers “forward” with respect to SBE. We now have current standards for all of our subject areas, and all teachers have received binders with those standards. Additionally, all standards are located on our DoDEA website.

I would like to congratulate all of our fall sports participants. We had a great season with stellar performances by all of our student athletes. Thanks to football, tennis, cross-country, volleyball, and cheer for a terrific season. Kinnick excelled in all sports, and I am very proud of our students. Our coaches spend hours and hours with your teens to ensure that they play hard but that they, also, learn/maintain the traits of honesty, integrity, and good sportsmanship. Very important!

We almost “got” Yokota at our first game against them – a one-point difference. We were beside ourselves. The second game wasn’t too good. BUT, one of these days . . .

Even though the Winter Break is almost upon us, Kinnick is going full speed! There are continuous activities occurring every night such as a first Honor Choir Recital, athletic banquets, dances, school fundraisers, bake sales on weekends, and class fundraisers.

Now, we’re beginning our winter sports season: wrestling, girls’ basketball, and boys’ basketball. For those of you who are new to us, we have four basketball teams – varsity and JV for both boys and girls. NJROTC is getting ready for their leadership mini boot camp weekend at Mt. Fuji. Drama is almost finished with its first production, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” We had to postpone our last performance (December 4) due to an approaching typhoon. We went into TCOR 1 at 5:00 p.m. and had to close down the campus. (A wrestling tournament, the play, and other student activities all had to stop!) Everything will be re-scheduled. Seems there is always a bit of excitement no matter what!

We at Nile C. Kinnick High School wish you, your families, and friends a wonderful holiday season and a very Happy New Year! I thank you for your continued support and loyalty to Yo-Hi/Kinnick High!

FEBRUARY 2005

Greetings to you all, and I apologize, again, for the lateness of this newsletter. I have been, once, again, traveling and am finally back at school until May. I’m very glad to be back. Believe it or not, I really hate being away.

Semester Exams are over, and the Second Semester has, once, again, started with the usual excitement among the students. We are now beginning the third week of the second semester. I always see this as a fresh start for students and a time to buckle down even more as we head towards the end of another school year! Students are enjoying talking about their new schedules, and there is a sense of urgency as we begin this second and last semester of the school year. Graduation will be here before we know it! This year, we will be having our KHS Graduation at the Yokosuka Theater. It is a beautiful and elegant location. We’ll try for the USS KITTY HAWK next year.

Speaking of graduation and our seniors, I’m enjoying my "Senior Interviews." I conduct a few every day or so, and am continually impressed with this group of upper classmen. I treasure our talks and honestly seek information from them as to how we can improve our high school. We, also, talk about goals and post-high school plans; I want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to make this year a successful one. Additionally, I’m asking our seniors for some lasting memories of Kinnick, and these memories will become part of my farewell to our seniors at graduation.

I just returned from a TDY to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the purpose of interviewing prospective teachers for our DoDDS system. That was a neat experience for me. Educators came from all over the United States to interview for a job with DoDDS. I met some really talented and enthusiastic teachers. Great experience for me!

Kinnick’s School Improvement Leadership Team, Erin Casey; Phil Ulmer; David Trajtenberg; Philip Bailey, and Stephanie Richardson have been very busy refining our School Improvement Plan. In fact, we had a very important NCA-CASI monitoring visit just last week and did very well. We have an extremely important accreditation visit next spring (spring, 2006). This visit will determine whether or not Kinnick High is an accredited high school. We anticipate smooth sailing for this visit.

I asked our parents, in this newsletter, to know what their teens are doing in their classes. This is important for all students but especially for our seniors. Some of our seniors are in danger of not graduating. We need our senior parents to monitor their teens’ work – it is that crucial! I expressed to our parents that there is nothing worse than getting right down to the wire and not have their teen graduate.

Our Winter Extra-Curricular Program brings many Far East events as well as many Kanto Plains Association of Secondary School Principals (KPASSP) events. These KPASSP events are with our DoDDS and Kanto Plain international schools.

I want to thank all of you, again, for your support. Most high schools in which I’ve been involved don’t have this grand of an alumni group or the years of involvement in their high schools. We at Kinnick High are very lucky.

Tari Wright, Principal

MARCH 2005

Dear Yo-Hi/Kinnick Alumni,

Spring is almost here although it may not be evident as of yet!  And, can you believe that we’re on our way to spring and the end of another school year? Although the entire school year is busy, the end of the year gets particularly hectic.

I was just thinking that you may not have our Intranet address.  I will send that out to you in another message.  You would probably enjoy accessing that and seeing what goes on at Kinnick, on a daily basis.  Our Internet is being re-vamped and should be ready to go soon if it is not already.  We have a new webmaster this year – new teacher to us, also – and he is doing a great job on getting our Internet up and running.  You can find just about everything you need to know on either one of these websites.

Just so you know what’s coming up during the month of March, I’ll go ahead and include what I sent out to parents and teachers.  The spring (March and May) tend to be our busiest months due to all of the testing that takes place.

TerraNova Test of Multiple Assessments.   The TerraNova will be given March 15, 16, 17.  Mrs. Fielder and Mrs. Joyner are our Assessment Coordinators and are working very hard in getting the test coordination accomplished.  They will be sending more specific information our very soon.  We have asked that parents assist us in ensuring that their teens are focused and ready to take these assessments.  We are fully aware that there are many ways in which to assess our students in order to determine what they know; however, the TerraNova results are a central focus on student achievement, and we want our students to take these tests seriously and do their very best on them.

Additional Testing.   In order to have more than one way of assessing our students’ achievement, we will be conducting several additional assessments.   Please take a look at the below schedule and respective grades.  The dates for CAPA and the end-of-course exams are testing “windows.”

Assessment Grade Levels Dates
PSAT All 10th/11th graders & others 13 Oct (Completed)
TerraNova II 3-11 15-17 Mar
TN Communication Arts (CAPA) 4/8/10 April/May
Algebra I End-of-Course Exam Algebra I students 23 May - 10 Jun
U. S. History End-of-Course Exam HS U. S. History / AP US History students 23 May -10 Jun
Biology (Field Testing) HS Biology / AP Biology students 23 May - 10 Jun

Progress Reports.   Progress Reports for this third quarter will be mailed out to parents the week of March 7.  The end of this third quarter is Thursday, April 7; Teacher Workday, April 8; and the 4th and last quarter of the school year begins on Monday, April 18! (Spring Break is late this year – April 11 – 15.)

CSI (Continuous School Improvement) In-services.  We continue to stay very busy with school improvement.  All teachers are involved in committees, working on our goals of problem solving and reading comprehension.  I want all parents to remember that we welcome them at any of our SILT meetings that are advertised on our calendars.  Please see the below listed CSI Half-day in-services:  There will be one additional CSI half-day. Please make note of this date:

    Friday, May 20 – Half-day SIP in-service; students dismissed at 11:05

AMI JROTC Inspection.   We will have our annual JROTC inspection coming up March 30 and wish our JROTC cadets the best of luck.  They are an outstanding group of individuals who can be seen practicing their drills on the courtyard late into the evenings.  Thanks to CDR Mode and PO Hasan for their tireless dedication to our cadets.  In addition to our annual invitation to the Black Ship Festival in Shimoda in May, our cadets have been invited to participate, again, in a St. Patrick’s Day Parade, hosted by the city of Yokohama, later on this month.  We are all very proud of our students at Kinnick.

Congratulations!!!   Congratulations to the Kinnick High School Red Devil Basketball Team, Red Devil ladies Basketball team, and the Red Devil Wrestling Team for their accomplishments during the Winter Sports Season.  They’ve all played hard/wrestled hard throughout the season.  Our Wrestling Team took third place in the Individual Match and second in the Dual Match.  The Dual Match was very exciting as we tied with Kubasaki.  The final decision was based on the number of pins, and Kubasaki had one more than we did.  Too close for comfort and very exciting!!

Once, again, I commend our coaches for all of the endless hours that they spend with our student athletes.  They go above and beyond the hours of their contracts and truly are a dedicated bunch of professionals – committed to doing the best for your teens.

Meetings and tryouts for our spring sports (baseball, soccer, and track) have just started.  There is our sports program as well as many other activities in which your teens can be involved.  Please encourage your teens to get involved in school. It makes a tremendous difference in grades and attitude.

Remember our doors are always open to all parents as well as alumni!

APRIL 2005

Dear Yo-Hi/Kinnick Alumni:

Happy Spring! I hope that by the time you receive this newsletter, the weather has warmed up for those of you in cold climates! Our Spring Break is late this year. The last day of school was Friday, April 8. We’re off from April 11 – 15.

You may not be too interested in the below information, but this was the focal point of my April newsletter to parents. I always want to give gentle reminders of expectations for spring and the winding down of the school year. I hope you don’t find this too repetitive. I will leave it all in the format in which it was sent to our parents.

Warmer weather is around the corner and so are the usual concerns with students such as appropriate attire, getting to school, getting to school on time, and staying focused! We have some upcoming class assemblies planned to discuss the above with all of our students. We are re-visiting rules and policies with our students on a daily basis. We need, and would sincerely appreciate, parental assistance with the following:

Dress Code Please remember that we do, indeed, have a dress code. We do not want to see females in short shorts and t-tops. Also, I don’t want to see bra straps at all such as with tops slid down on shoulders! Yep, I admit I’m old fashioned. Our male students may not wear undershirts without shirts over them. Flip-flops (shower shoes) are not permitted. We are still seeing many, many baggy pants on our male students worn way below their "behinds." Do-rags, bandannas, and skull caps are not permitted on campus at all! The dress code is in your teens’ planners (in their KHS Handbooks) as well as on our Intranet. Please review it with your teens and remind them that we are adhering to the base-wide dress code.

Weapons This is a strong reminder that students are not to have weapons of any sort on campus or on school trips. This includes toy replicas! I cannot emphasize this enough. If students violate this DoDEA policy, they will be suspended pending an expulsion hearing. Please remind your teens about this policy.

In addition to the above, students have a responsibility to report any violations of the above policy. We want our Kinnick High School community to be safe for all students. Additionally, students have a right to come to school free of harassment, threats, and anything else that might impede their learning.

Homework The Kinnick High School teachers work very hard to ensure the best education for Kinnick teens. We cannot do it alone; we need the support of our parents. Therefore, please ensure that your teens do their homework. Our teachers are constantly teaching, re-teaching, testing, re-testing, and trying to assist students in achieving mastery with needed skills. A strong component to all of this is the assignment of homework to reinforce those skills. We need for you to ensure that the homework is completed, placed in the bookbags, and taken to school. Please, please help us with this, also.

Please remember that permission for the Early Withdrawal/Departure program is for PCS moves only. All other students must remain in school for the remainder of the semester or take grades-to-date. Please refer to the Student/Parent Handbook for specifics about this DoDDS policy. This year, May 18 is the earliest date on which students may accelerate with credit for the entire semester. And, that has to be planned way ahead of time, of course, so that students who choose this option can do the work necessary to accelerate and receive semester grades.

As we begin our last quarter of the school year right after Spring Break (April 18), we ask your support in getting your teens to focus on academic achievement. We have many programs in place to assist your teens such as:

EBAT (Educational/Behavioral Assistance Team) which not only works at identifying teens who are having difficulties but puts plans into place to assist these teens

KAC (Kinnick Achievement Center) where students may go during the school day for extra help with studies and test-taking

ASSP (After-School Study Program – located in the information Center and open to all students to receive help; computers and tutors available Monday – Thursday, 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

ASACS (Adolescence Substance Abuse Counseling) which works in conjunction with our guidance counselors and school nurse to assist students who have problems with substance abuse

AGP (Alternate Graduation Plan) – for KHS students who cannot make it in the school setting; one last chance to work with a professional on correspondence courses and/or an on-line GED study course to prepare for the GED

Fleet and Family Service Center that, also, works with our teens on topics such as anger management and self esteem, etc.

Our Guidance Department – three professionals dedicated to ensuring your teens are able to do their best academically as well as emotionally

Our School Psychologist, Ms. Jessica Biggs, available for all students and, along with our counselors, will visit with parents when necessary

Our professional teaching staff dedicated to providing the best education for your teens

The KHS administration and office staff which also takes time on a regular basis to work with and assist your children

All of the above individuals work constantly with your teens as well as to identify students at risk in order to put plans in place to assist. We work together to do the very best at providing for your teens. If you have concerns about your teen’s academic or emotional welfare, please let us know. Our assistance teams meet on a regular basis to identify and discuss concerns.

Back to our alumni - as always, I want to give you a taste of what goes on at Kinnick High. I know some of the information is repetitive but hope you enjoy the information. Kinnick is a very busy place, but we have a great school with terrific students and a terrific community. I thank you for your continued support, and if you ever have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

MAY 2005

Dear Yo-Hi/KHS Alumni:

It’s hard to believe that our Spring Break is over, and we are now ready to "wind up" for the end of the school year. I really think this is the busiest time of the year. I believe all of our students had a good break and are now ready to focus on the many end-of-year activities as well as finals which will be here before we know it.

Also, this is our next to the last newsletter for this school year. I cannot believe the year is almost over! As always, this is a time of reflection as to this tremendous, as well as very busy, school year and all that has been accomplished, all that is left to do, and where I want to begin next year. I feel so very fortunate to have such terrific students as well as a very dedicated, hard-working, and extremely professional teaching staff.

As is the case for this time of the year, I always give parents reminders about the calendar, re-registering their teens, the dress code (ALWAYS the dress code) and other items for ending the school year. I won’t include all of those things, but here are a couple:

Graduation: This is a very exciting part of the school year, as you know. We will be having our ceremony at the Yokosuka Theater this year. The Yokosuka Theater, near the base and attached to the Prince Hotel, is a beautiful facility. This will be the third time that we have held graduation there. We will continue to try for the KITTY HAWK every year. That is always our first choice. This year, we are very fortunate to have Dr. Nancy Bresell, Director of DoDDS Pacific/DDESS Guam as our guest speaker.

Junior/Senior Prom: Please keep checking our Intranet for prom updates. Mr. Marc Zamora, Junior Class Sponsor, is in charge and has done a tremendous job at planning this year’s prom. It will be at the New Sanno this year, and will be held on Saturday, May 7. Mr. Zamora just sent out an email to all parents about the prom particulars. He has everything very well-planned. Please know that we are responsible for your teens during the prom. You must assume responsibility for them afterwards. Please know where they are at all times. (The 2004 – 2005 Junior/Senior Prom has come and gone! It was a huge success and one of the nicest we’ve ever had. Elegantly done, the theme was "A Red Carpet Affair" and was modeled after the Academy Awards. The New Sanno ballroom was just beautiful. The sit-down candlelight dinner was delicious. And, the kids were great. It was a wonderful evening.)

Things are really gearing up at Kinnick! Banquets, balls, awards assemblies, and Yo-Hi Day are coming up.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support, and do not ever hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I am thrilled with the huge alumni following for our great school.

JUNE 2005

Dear Yo-Hi/Kinnick Alumni:

With the school year almost over, I would like to, again, thank you for your support this school year. We, the Nile C. Kinnick High School faculty, staff, administrators, and students have sincerely appreciated the community involvement in so many of our initiatives and endeavors. Your words of support and encouragement throughout the year have been deeply and sincerely appreciated.

Again, it’s been especially nice being in touch with our alumni!

SAYONARA: With the end of the school year come many changes for the following school year. We will be bidding sayonara to the following Nile C. Kinnick High School teachers and staff members:

Ms. Erin Casey Social Studies/MUN/School Improvement

Mr. Jimmy Davis Social Studies/Football/Softball/Baseball Coach

Mr. Al Dawson SPED Classroom Support

Mr. Geoff Hunt ESL

Ms. Danielle Lajoie French/Spanish

Mrs. Jackie Means Information Specialist/Class Sponsor

Mrs. Michelle Penaranda Registrar

Mr. Robby Rhinehart Math/Wrestling Coach

Mr. Robert Stovall English/Football Coach

Mr. Marc Zamora Substitute/Class Sponsor/Newsletter/Office Support

These staff members will be heading off to many different locations . . . most will be teaching at other schools within DoDDS or returning to the US of A, and one, Mr. Dawson, will be retiring. We will miss them all. Wherever their paths take them, they will be missed at Kinnick High School. We thank them all for their hard work, their devotion to students and to Kinnick High, and for their never-ending support.

Sayonara, also, to our community members who are leaving us. You know who you are. We can't thank you enough for all that you have done to make Kinnick High School a better school. Please don't lose touch.

NEW TEACHERS AND CURRENT PROGRAMS: I am currently interviewing prospective teachers and hope to have this very important task accomplished before I leave for a month-long vacation on July 1. I will keep you posted as to the names and teaching assignments of our new teachers.

As you can see from the individuals leaving, there is much to do with respect to staffing. We lost one teaching position for this upcoming school year; however, we’ll still be okay with respect to our pupil/teacher ratio (PTR). We will continue our algebra, geometry, English Language Arts, and Read 180 support labs. We will, also, be adding a Culinary Arts program. As always, I won’t know how all of the staffing will work out until we finish the master schedule and see exactly what classes students have signed up for. Our first objective is to honor as many student requests as possible; we call this a student-generated schedule.

We will be continuing with our 9th grade teams; however, with the demolition of our "A" Building (next to the Chapel of Hope), we will be moving most of those teachers to the "C" or "L"-shaped building by the Post Office. Two of our 9th grade teams will be there, and one will be in the Main Building.

GRADUATION: Graduation for the Class of 2005 will be on Thursday, June 16, 2005, 1700, at the Yokosuka Arts Theater (next to the Prince Hotel) – within walking distance from the base. All guests must have tickets. Mr. Phil Ulmer, Senior Class Sponsor, is the POC for tickets, and he is always happy to answer any questions you may have about graduation. Mr. Ulmer’s email address is:

Philip.ulmer@pac.dodea.edu

REGISTRATION: Every student must be re-registered each year. If you have not completed this process, please do so immediately. Just because you went through our new on-line course registration/selection process earlier does not mean you are registered. The re-registration process takes about five - ten minutes. All students must be registered or re-registered if they want a 2005 – 2006 schedule of classes. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Michelle Penaranda, Registrar at 243-7392. Mrs. Penaranda’s email address is:

Michelle.Penaranda@pac.dodea.edu

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: We thought you would want to know that the first day of school for next school year is Tuesday, August 30, 2004. More detailed information about next year will be sent to you in early August.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION: There will be a KHS New Student Orientation sponsored by the Nile C. Kinnick Student Council on Monday, August 29, 1100 a.m. in the Little Theater. We will make certain that more information about the orientation is out in advance. Please pass this information on to new high school community members as they arrive at Yokosuka.

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION: There will, also, be a KHS New Parent Orientation on August 29, at 1630, in the Little Theater. This is for all parents of high school students who are brand new to Yokosuka, not for the parents of incoming 9th graders who have been living here for a while.

OPEN HOUSE: Our SY 2005 - 2006 Open House will be on Thursday, September 15, 2005, 1630, Little Theater. Please mark your calendars accordingly. The plan for the evening will be a brief welcome by me in the Little Theater, an introduction of our new teachers, and then parents and students will be free to visit classes of their choice. Teaches will have handouts and talk, in general, about classroom expectations.

UPDATED CALENDAR: Please, please, please remember to access our school Intranet for the current Master Calendar, student bulletins, and a wealth of school information. The links to our Intranet are always featured in this electronic student/parent newsletter (towards the end). You will, also, receive an early – mid August newsletter from me giving updates on the beginning of the new school year.

If you want to email me about the newsletter, or anything else in particular, please do so at my email address on the front page of this newsletter. It is imperative that we have your correct and preferred email addresses. If you have fellow Kinnick parents who are not receiving messages, please remind them to give us correct email addresses. We really want our newsletters (and numerous other messages that I send out) to reach everyone.

This school year has, again, been wonderful in so many ways. As always, I thank you for your support and for your kindness. I feel so very fortunate to have the best students in the world - students who are kind and caring and who continue to make my years here very special. I wish all of you a happy and relaxing summer. And, yes, I will be back for another wonderful year at Kinnick High School.

Fair winds and following seas to you all.
