23. The Tenzui-in Juto
Across the pond from the Rinshun-kaku stands the Tenzui-in Juto pictured above, its square white walls contrasting sharply with the curved and sloping black roof, and the whole small but elegant building in harmony with the plane of the ground about the pond.
A Juto in ancient times was a kind of mausoleum erected during one's lifetime to celebrate his longevity. This one was built by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in the courtyard of the Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, in thanksgiving for his mother's recovery from a serious illness. After her death the building was dedicated to her soul.
